Introducing Oxford Elite: Our Story, Our Mission and Our Approach to Learning

Welcome to Oxford Elite Education Centre. For our first blog post, we’d like to introduce ourselves, share the story behind the centre and explain what we hope to bring to families in Hong Kong.
At the heart of Oxford Elite is a simple belief: children make meaningful progress when teaching is structured around their needs and delivered with patience, care and clear expectations.
Our Story: From Australia to Hong Kong
Oxford Elite was founded by Michael Li, drawing on experience in both teaching students and helping operate a tutoring business in Australia.
Michael previously tutored students privately in Maths and English. Working directly with students gave him experience explaining concepts, identifying gaps in understanding and adapting lessons to different learning needs.
Between 2021 and 2024, Michael served as Head of Finance (CFO) at Atlas Academia, a tutoring centre in Epping, Sydney which at its time reached ~200 students and ~20 teachers. His involvement in operating the centre provided a different perspective: how to support teachers, organise a growing education business and build the processes behind a dependable service for families.
These two experiences helped shape Oxford Elite. Michael brings an understanding of what happens during a lesson, alongside the operational experience needed to support consistent teaching and clear communication beyond it.
The vision is to build a centre where students receive thoughtful, personalised support, teachers have clear direction and parents understand how their child is progressing.
Our Mission
Our mission is to help students build strong academic foundations, grow in confidence and become independent thinkers through structured, personalised and caring teaching.
For us, understanding and confidence develop together. When students understand a concept, they have a stronger reason to feel confident. When they feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, teachers can better identify where they need help.
We aim to support both, step by step, while encouraging students to take increasing responsibility for their learning.
Starting with the Individual Student
Every child brings a different combination of strengths, interests and learning needs.
A student may speak English confidently but struggle to organise a written response. Another may remember a maths procedure but find it difficult to explain why it works. A child who seems reluctant to participate may need more time, a different explanation or a topic that sparks their interest.
We begin by understanding what the student can already do and where they need support. This gives us a starting point for setting useful goals and choosing lessons at an appropriate level.
Personalised teaching means making purposeful choices about what to teach, how to explain it and how much practice a student needs before moving forward.
Building Understanding Step by Step
Clear explanations, guided practice and independent application are central to our approach.
In English, this might mean helping a student move from identifying an idea in a text to selecting evidence and explaining what that evidence shows. In Maths, it could involve breaking a problem into manageable steps and asking the student to explain their reasoning. In Science, an everyday example may help make an unfamiliar concept easier to understand.
Across subjects, we encourage students to consider three questions:
What have I learned?
Can I explain it in my own words?
Can I use it in a new situation?
These questions help guide our teaching and give students a clearer sense of their own progress.
Connecting Learning with Everyday Life
Michael’s professional background as an investment analyst also informs his interest in connecting academic skills with practical situations.
Where appropriate, lessons can draw on business stories, technology and topics students already enjoy. An article about a familiar app can offer opportunities to practise reading comprehension, distinguish evidence from assumptions and develop a written argument. Comparing subscription prices can bring mathematical reasoning into the same discussion.
These connections serve a clear learning purpose. They help students see how the skills they practise in lessons can be used to understand the world around them.
Giving Each Lesson a Clear Direction
We want each lesson to contribute to a broader learning plan.
That means identifying specific areas for improvement, revisiting skills that need more practice and gradually increasing the level of challenge. Purposeful homework helps students consolidate their learning and gives teachers a clearer picture of what they can do independently.
Progress can take different forms: a more accurate sentence, a clearer explanation, a stronger paragraph or the confidence to attempt a question without immediate help. We aim to recognise those steps while keeping the next goal clear.
Working in Partnership with Parents
Parents should understand what their child is working on and why it matters.
We aim to keep feedback practical and specific: what went well, what remains difficult and what the student should practise next. This helps families support a consistent learning routine and gives us a basis for adjusting lessons as the student develops.
Michael’s teaching and operational experience come together here. A successful tutoring service needs careful lesson preparation, reliable organisation and consistent follow-through, alongside supportive teaching.
Looking Ahead
Through this blog, we’ll share practical learning tips, explore common academic challenges and offer ideas families can use at home. We’ll also explain the thinking behind our teaching approach.
Thank you for getting to know Oxford Elite. Whether your child needs stronger foundations, greater confidence or support with more demanding schoolwork, we would be happy to discuss their needs and the next steps in their learning.
